October 2004: The Hardwood Plywood & Veneer Association (HPVA), with the approval of the American National Standards Institute, released an
updated version of the American National Standard for Hardwood and Decorative Plywood. Revisions to the standard include:
- Three imported hardwood species--anegre, makore and sapele--have been added to the face grade tables and must now meet the same requirements as mahogany.
- Beech was added to the face grade tables and must now meet the same requirements as ash, birch, maple and poplar.
- Grade tables were added for door faces. The new tables allow the minimum widths of components of door faces to be 1 inch less than those required for all other plywood in the top three grades of plain sliced and rotary
faces.
- A new grade was added to the western red alder face grade tables. The C/1 grade is now divided into two separate grades: C/Rustic and 1/Back.
- A number of terms to hardwood plywood grading were changed or added. Terms clarified include: plank-matched, figure, combination core, sugar and the definition of hardwood plywood itself, which now includes the recognition
of synthetic backer sheets as an acceptable back material.
The complete version of the standard (ANSI/HPVA HP-1-2004) can be ordered through the HPVA's Web site: www.hpva.org. In addition, the HPVA offers the completely revised Hardwood Plywood Handbook, a visual companion to the
hardwood and decorative plywood standard. The handbook costs $20.
